The imagery is beautiful. I love your descriptive writing. Your last description, of the grey world outside, sadly looks like what is happening right now, as our planet burns.

I actually came up with this story idea a few months ago during autumn! I was upstate and noticed the foliage was a little duller than usual. Then, I imagined a world where the leaves stopped changing, forcing society to create an alternative.
